How to Wear Blue Eyeshadow

Sugarpill Royal Sugar Pigment

So we all know that blue eyeshadow works from some of the amazing makeup looks we’ve seen being done with it over the years, but have we ever stopped to consider HOW or WHY it’s wearable?

Many of us see these makeup looks and tutorials and admire how pretty they are, but I really wanted to make a video including some tips on how to make blue eyeshadow wearable, suitable for dark complexions, as well as what to look for in different types of blues.

Remember these are just guidelines and tips for those who aren’t as knowledgeable as to wear to start with bolder eyeshadow looks. This isn’t meant to be taken literally for every single person 😛

tip one: Stick to navy or richer, deeper blue hues. Royal blue is great too! If you’ve never attempted to wear a blue eyeshadow you may want to ease your way into it with something that has a midnight hue to it. It looks great in the evening and really stands out on brown eyes. The lighter the blue, the more bolder the effect. Think robins egg blue, pastel blue, ocean blue, etc. Not to say we can’t pull those colors off because we absolutely can, but going lighter tends to go for a more creative and avante garde look.

tip two: Placement is everything! When using a bold blue stay below the crease of the eye to prevent the shade from looking like a sucker punch to the face. Please it will start to look ruddy when trying to blend with other shadows. When it comes to lighter and pastels blues and shimmers keep them off the lower lash line! Unless of course you are going for a more creative look. Light blue also looks beautiful in the tear duct of the eyes.

tip three: Use an eyeshadow base, especially if you want the blue to look as vibrant on your eyes as it does in the pan.

tip four: Keep the blue eyes in check by maintaining the rest of the face with subdued and nude tones. I usually reach for either peach blush and peachy/nude lips or soft pinks to pair with my bright blue eyes so it doesn’t overpower the whole look.

And that’s it! Pretty easy right?!

My First Time! The Kelley Baker Brow Experience

Happy Friday love bugs! A couple weeks ago I had been dabbling with the idea of growing my brows out for a bit and then going to a professional salon and having them done rather than shaping them myself like I normally do. I have NEVER had my brows touched by anyone, ever. So being that this was my first salon experience (and all of the brow horror stories we’ve all heard) you know I had to go to the best.

I heard about Kelley Baker and her salon sometime this year via instagram. I found out she was here in LA, but it never crossed my mind to ever go there and try them out since I am too busy being boujie doing it my own way. I’m sorry guys, I would rather mess up myself than to pay someone else to do it. So I just really loved following the page and seeing all of the fabulous works of art they would create.

I ended up running into Kelley in person at the NYX Face Awards earlier this summer and she was such a sweetheart! I thought to myself I would love to network with this woman in some form or another in the future because she seems very professional, positive and obviously being talented helps! (Peep her instagram if you’d like to see for yourself).

So anywho back to my review, I was able to make an appointment directly with Kelley and she was able to accommodate me even though I booked the day before. Now again I’ve never had my brows done so when I got to her salon off Abbott Kinney in Venice this morning I had no idea what to expect. Los Angeles natives will know that Abbott Kinney is a very popular, hipster part of Venice. I thought for sure I would run into issues with traffic and parking when I got there but I didn’t. She’s got plenty of ample free street parking right in front of the salon and if you’re from LA you KNOW how important this is. Parking here in certain parts of this city can be all the difference between you getting there on time OR you getting there late as hell.

So anywho, I rolled right up, walked into the salon which was on the 2nd floor of a small mulit-office business building. It was SUPER clean, well-light, comfortable and quiet. I felt like I could just lay right down and relax.

The service took about 30 minutes and I was told to be there promptly at 9:30 because she had a 10 o’clock appointment following me. And in my head I’m thinking “I’m sure it won’t take 30 minutes”…I was wrong! Kelley really gets in there and puts in WORK. She did a combination of trimming the hair, waxing, and plucking. She doesn’t just get in there and whack at your brows. She takes her time and it’s very apparent she has her own signature style and technique.

At the end of the service she fills your brows in using brow powders from her line of products and you’re set!

So I’m guessing you’re dying to see my results…

Brow Review

My favorite part about my experience at the salon…

1. I love the fact that I was able to see Kelley directly because in my eyes she’s a celebrity expert in herself. Because I’ve never had this service done anywhere else I’m not sure this is something that’s as easily achievable when you visit other competitive salons (being able to book directly with their most appraised artist).

2. I love the fact that I got in and got out EASILY and hassle free, no issues with parking or finding the place. Not sure if it was because it was early but for a lot of people if getting to your shop is not easy it would definitely be looked at as a deterrent.

3. And lastly of COURSE I love the way she rendered the service. She didn’t over tweeze. And the main thing I have been trying to do with my own brows is to get my left brow to grow a little lower since it arches higher than my right brow. She was able to do with so I surely DO appreciate that!!!

Will future brow visits with Kelley be in my future! Hell yeah! With my hectic schedule will I be able to do something like this regularly? I’m not sure, but I’m definitely willing to consider which says a lot because I hate going to the salon or doing anything that requires me to sit still for longer than 15 minutes (hence the reason why I never get my nails done) lol

I hope those of you who were hoping to try her out will consider it now because she’s amazing!!! She’s got a location in Venice and a  location in Beverly Hills.

That’s all I got folks! Now I’m off to edit a video. Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Military Makeup Tutorial Get Ready With Me in Uniform!

Many people seem to have this pre-carved image of what military women look like. It’s often an image that’s not very pleasant, let alone feminine. Yes ladies who serve are allowed to wear makeup in uniform, we just have standards in place we have to abide by. And since many of you have asked me what that’s like as well as military-friendly hairstyles I thought I would share my favorite go-to makeup look and hair style.

I also really wanted to do this makeup tutorial based on the recent changes to the hair regulations implemented in the Army guidelines. Every branch has their own set of standards that vary from each other so I’m doing this based on the regulations I have to follow being that I am in the Army.

This is a look that anyone can benefit from, whether you serve or not so all of my professional and office gals can take notes too if they’d like!

The look is clean, simple and not overly done. It says ‘I can still get the job done in style’. Enjoy!

Outfit of the Day | Royal Blue

Royal blue is one of my favorite colors to see on dark skin. Royal blue and silk together make for an even sexier combo on our deep warm complexions. Actually I am quite convinced that royal blue is a power color that looks good on just about everyone. Check out this new dress from my shopmarkkit collection that I have been rocking (and you ladies have been asking about) lately
